The BeatForge step sequencer: per-track controls, a 16-step grid and the envelope panel

01 Machines

606, 808, 909, Syncussion. Drawn, not sampled.

Each one rebuilt voice by voice from the maker’s own service drawings, then checked against hardware recordings.

TR-6067 voices

Bridged-T bodies, and the op-amp stage doing the saturating. Both hi-hats share one cell, like the hardware.

TR-80816 voices

One shared noise bus and trigger bus, so a dense accented bar sags the rail. Cymbal with its real swell.

TR-90911 voices

Seven analogue voices, plus the metals’ real PCM chain: six-bit ROM, R-2R ladder, analogue VCA.

SyncussionPearl SY-1

Pearl’s 1979 drum synth (Kitchen Sink in the engine list). One tune bus drives the oscillators, the filter and the decay, so a higher pitch dies faster. Hit harder and the sweep goes further.

No matching EQ anywhere in the plugin. Every filter and every time constant traces back to a component on a drawing, or it does not ship.

Tune a voice and the capacitors change in the model, so a pitched hat roll behaves like hardware being retuned. Every DECAY and RING knob is a real mod at a named point in the schematic, detented at stock.

02 Engines

Forty-plus engines. No sample library.

Every voice is generated as you hit it. New in 5.0: the Pearl Syncussion SY-1 as a circuit model. New in 5.0.2: Donk, the four-operator FM synth, runs like Yamaha’s YM2414 chip, with 128 factory voices and .syx import.

03 Inside

One window, six ways to work.

BeatForge step sequencer
Hold a step, turn a knob, it’s locked. Scroll a step to another of the track’s 32 edit groups.
BeatForge pattern bank and song chain
16 slots, switching quantized to the bar, chained into a song and dragged out as one MIDI clip.
BeatForge pads dock
Arm REC and drum it in. Overdubs as it loops, hard hits become accents.
BeatForge slicer with transient markers
Native .rx2 plus a slicer for WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3 and OGG. Lockable markers, per-slice outputs.
BeatForge mixer
A compressor on every strip, MIDI in or out per track, any track or slice to its own output pair.
BeatForge in the Deep Red theme
Five palettes, switched with one click on the logo.

05 Proof

Built by one person.

BeatForge is written by one developer in Belgium. Mail beatforgehelp@gmail.com and you get him, usually the same day.

The claims here are checkable: the compressor’s signal path is on GitHub under MIT, derivation included, with an honest list of every approximation it makes.

Two documented hardware mods were built, measured, and thrown away because they did not do what their label claimed.
